The climate of the Costa Brava is, to us, perfect. Why? Because you get four seasons...
A warm spring, where all the flowers and trees are
in bloom, everything is fabulously green and fresh,
the beaches are pretty much empty and the winter
migrating birds return.
Then comes a beautiful hot summer (but not too hot...
the average summer temperature is around 24 degrees)
with low humidity, where the beaches are in full swing,
the sea is wonderfully cooling, the beach towns bustle,
but the mountains remain cool and relatively quiet.
Autumn, the leaves turn golden, but it is still sunny
and warm, but so much quieter now most of the
tourists have headed home.
In winter it can snow, or it can be sunny and surprisingly
warm (we have eaten Christmas lunch on the terrace in
t-shirts before), but personally, I love being able to light
the fire on a winters evening. Streams that dry up in the
summer, run again, dividing many beaches (which you
will have to yourself) in two.

The topography of Catalonia (Catalunya) means that prevailing winds affect areas of the Costa Brava in different ways.
The Tramuntana can be pretty strong, particularly offshore. It mainly affects the north of the Costa Brava and is the reason that the Bay of Roses and the bay of L’Estartit are great for strong windy water sports.
The west winds of Garbi, Ponent and Mistral blow mainly at night but are quiet gentle - so if you have a boat, dropping anchor for the night off the Costa Brava is a perfect spot.
